Reel around the fountain- the Smiths. A beautiful, romantic song about a wholly unromantic sexual encounter, being romanticised because of loss of innocence and importance to the narrator. Morrissey romanticises things well, he (sometimes) writes about lust well, here he does both. Most finely, too.

Romantic Fatigue- Frank Turner. I like the guitar on it, and I like the lyrics (“When I get out my guitar tonight, remember, I probably didn’t write this song for you). I really like Frank Turner.

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head- B.J. Thomas. This is in two films I like an awful lot (Spider-Man 2, the best comic book movie ever, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which is so fun and funny and then has a great ending (I am not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it), so gets in by association. Also it’s an happy song, and occasionally I like reserves of happy songs.

Rubberband Girl- Kate Bush. Again, it partially gets in by association (it has an AWESOME dance sequence in “The Line, The Cross and the Curve”, and makes a great opening to both that film and to the album.) I like the chorus-y nature of it, and the echo effects. It is generally pretty cool. Not my favourite Kate Bush by any means, but good. Better at the opening than at the frankly insane end, but all in all I like it.

Rip It Up (and Start Again)- Orange Juice. I like Edwyn Collins. I like him a lot. He often writes very pretty songs, which are nice and sad. Sometimes, more frequently earlier in his career, he has written fantastically energetic fun songs which are very cheery and bouncy and make me happy.

I stewarded at the re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall last year, and Frank Turner was playing in the lobby I was stewarding. He was brilliant, especially as his set was hampered by a long irate queue of classical music fans whose concert had been delayed snaking through his crowd. Eventually he united the crowd by leading a singalong of "We Are The Champions" and "Dancing Queen". It was very fun. It also means I have spoken to him, in the form of apologising for the fact that his set was somewhat disrupted.

I also saw Edwyn Collins live, in more conventional circumstances. He was very good.
