I would query that they "very rarely had to come into contact with that stuff", and the fact that much of it was starting then, rather than there all along. That school does not handle mental health well, and I also query what you mean by "their parts" some of the year were either homophobic, or picked up on it as a convenient thing (see treatment of Dana).
